About the Temple

妙顯寺

Founded in 1321 by Saint Nichizo, Myokenji was the first Lotus Sutra temple in Kyoto, and in 1334 received imperial decree as a prayer temple from Emperor Go-Daigo. It preserves four gardens — among them the Korin Kyokusui garden, linked to the painter Ogata Korin — and a great hall of solid zelkova rebuilt after the Tenmei fire.
